Brides-To-Be

It’s the Holidays, and that usually means couples all over the world are getting engaged! If you are a Bride-To-Be, and planning your upcoming Wedding, may we be one of the first to say Congratulations! What a great way to start out the new year! And there are so many Bridal shows in January to choose from. Choose wisely, because some are better than others. We recommend all the shows that we will be attending which are listed under Bridal Shows on our website, WeddingGuideonline.com These snow scenes are beautiful, but it sure is nice to be outside in the warm sunshine like today. Days like today and yesterday, are the reason we all love living in sunny Southern California! The snow is fun to visit, but living in it every day is a different story. For comfort, I’ll take a beach scene over a snow scene any day! Snowboarding works great in the sand. Sand is a lot like snow, but much warmer. We hope your Christmas was just as wonderful as ours was, and that you all have a safe, and very Happy New Year. Try to slow your life down, relax and enjoy the rest of this year with your Family & Friends. We’ll see you in January...

Thank You's

Consider sending thank you notes in Holiday cards. If you haven't had a chance to send your "thank you's" out for your Weddings gifts, why not take advantage of the Holidsys to do so. You can include them in a Holiday card, or if you have sent already sent them, include a Wedding picture for a personal touch. One of your duties as newlyweds is to acknowledge each and every wedding gift with a hand-written note of appreciation. Write your notes on plain white or pastel paper, perhaps with borders, but simple enough to maintain the dignity of the Wedding occasion. Mono-grammed stationery is also an elegant touch. To help keep a record of gifts received, you can use a bridal book, an ordinary notebook, or a box of notecards. Allow space for the name of the giver, the description of the gift, and the date the thank you note was sent. The easiest method is to combine your invitation list and your gift list on the same page; this way, addresses are readily available, and you only have to add two additional columns. Ideally, you should write each note as the gift arrives, so that you won’t get behind. Regardless, however, all thank you notes MUST be sent within three months after your wedding. In circumstances where a prompt note is impossible (such as a large wedding of over 250 guests), a printed acknowledgement is acceptable but always followed by a hand-written note. Since most gifts are sent to the bride, it is she who usually writes AND signs the notes, making a reference to the groom (“...John and I appreciated...”). In some cases, where the gift-giver is a stranger to the bride or a close friend of the groom’s, it is correct for the groom to do the honors. Always mention the specific gift. Most of all, be warm and appreciative, remembering that the gift-giver spent extra time and energy to choose something special for you both.

Thanksgiving Weddings with Family

Congratulations if you are getting married this Holiday weekend! Whatever you do on Thanksgiving, we hope that you will take at lease a few moments to really be thankful for what you have, especially for the friends and family that love you. We will be spending precious time with our close family, and loving every minute of it! You should do the same... Here is a little history on the Holiday. Thanksgiving in the United States was observed on various dates throughout history. From the time of the Founding Fathers until the time of Lincoln, the date Thanksgiving was observed varied from state to state. The final Thursday in November had become the customary date in most U.S. states by the beginning of the 19th century. Thanksgiving was first celebrated on the same date by all states in 1863 by a presidential proclamation of Abraham Lincoln. Influenced by the campaigning of author Sarah Josepha Hale, who wrote letters to politicians for around 40 years trying to make it an official holiday, Lincoln proclaimed the date to be the final Thursday in November in an attempt to foster a sense of American unity between the Northern and Southern states. Because of the ongoing Civil War and the Confederate States of America's refusal to recognize Lincoln's authority, a nationwide Thanksgiving date was not realized until Reconstruction was completed in the 1870s. On December 26, 1941, President Franklin D. Roosevelt signed a joint resolution of Congress changing the national Thanksgiving Day from the last Thursday in November to the fourth Thursday. Two years earlier, Roosevelt had used a presidential proclamation to try to achieve this change, reasoning that earlier celebration of the holiday would give the country an economic boost. In the United States, the modern Thanksgiving holiday tradition is commonly, but not universally, traced to a poorly documented 1621 celebration at Plymouth in present-day Massachusetts. The 1621 Plymouth feast and thanksgiving was prompted by a good harvest. Pilgrims and Puritans who began emigrating from England in the 1620s and 1630s carried the tradition of Days of Fasting and Days of Thanksgiving with them to New England. Several days of Thanksgiving were held in early New England history that have been identified as the "First Thanksgiving", including Pilgrim holidays in Plymouth in 1621 and 1623, and a Puritan holiday in Boston in 1631. In later years, religious thanksgiving services were declared by civil leaders such as Governor Bradford, who planned a thanksgiving celebration and fast in 1623. The practice of holding an annual harvest festival did not become a regular affair in New England until the late 1660s.

Weddings Become Marriages

Getting Married should be about the Marriage and not about the Wedding. So many Brides get caught up in planning a perfect Wedding, they don’t think about the “Ever After”. I am a firm believer in Marriage and living “Happily Ever After”. That doesn’t mean that everything in your life after your Wedding will always be perfect, but if your expectations aren’t unrealistic you can have a very happy life together. When you go through the good times, it is so wonderful to have someone to share and enjoy those times with, and when times are tough, you have someone by your side to help you, and you can work through them together. The secret is, not having any secrets from each other. That doesn’t mean that you need to report to each other on every little detail of your life, but that you always share your feelings and opinions with each other about the important things. You can agree to disagree, but at least you are talking and sharing. Pick your battles carefully, everything is not worth fighting about. Starting with the day you say “I Do” to each other, work together as a unit and you can accomplish so much more in life. Don’t try to change each other, just accept each others faults and focus on your strengths. Work to bring out the best in your partner, and allow them to bring out the best in you as well. Always make time for each other, and remember why you fell in love, and you should stay in love for the rest of your lives. A few “Words of Wisdom” shared with you from Debbie Christensen, Publisher of The Wedding Guide.

Autumn Brides

Autumn is a great month for your Wedding. It is cooler, less crowded, makes for beautiful photographs, and sometimes can be less expensive, depending on the location. October has become one of the busiest months for couple to say "I Do". In recent years, October typically has more Weddings than June! Autumn is the season between summer and winter. The Northern Hemisphere, the northern half of the earth, has autumn weather during late September, October, and November. Autumn weather does not last so long in the polar region, where extremely cold winter weather begins earlier. In tropical regions, seasonal changes are not great. The Southern Hemisphere has autumn from March until early June. For the dates of the first day of autumn and information about the position of the earth and sun during autumn. Many people call this season fall because it is the period of falling leaves. Autumn is also harvest time for many crops. In North America, early autumn days are generally warm and nights are cool. As winter approaches, the air becomes chillier and frost often occurs at night. In much of North America, the end of autumn is marked by the freezing of lakes and streams, southern migration of birds, and prewinter snowstorms. Autumn--especially September--is the season when most hurricanes occur. Hurricanes cause great damage along the coasts of the Gulf of Mexico and the western North Atlantic Ocean. Some regions do not have all four climatic seasons. In parts of the tropics, for example, temperatures change little. But the amount of rainfall varies greatly, so that these regions have a wet season and a dry season. The polar regions, on the other hand, have a light season and a dark season. In these areas, the sun shines almost all the time in summer and almost never in the winter. The changing seasons are caused by the changing position of the earth in relation to the sun. The dates used for the first day of each season mark the beginning of the astronomical seasons. The beginning and end of the climatic seasons vary from these dates from place to place and from year to year. The temperature and weather do not change instantly in response to the changing position of the earth in relation to the sun. The warmest and coldest weather generally occurs several weeks after the beginning of the summer and winter astronomical seasons. The delays occur because the oceans require much time to warm up in summer and cool down in winter. The seasons keep changing because the tilt of the earth's axis never changes while the earth circles the sun. One way to understand this is to picture which way the tilt of the axis causes the North Pole to slant at different times of the year. Autumn begins on September 22 or 23, the day of the autumnal equinox, when the pole starts to slant away from the sun. At both equinoxes, the sun appears directly above the equator. Places on the earth have approximately 12 hours of daylight and 12 hours of darkness. Contributor: John E. Enjoy Labor Day weekend

The History of Labor Day Labor Day: How it Came About; What it Means Labor Day, the first Monday in September, is a creation of the labor movement and is dedicated to the social and economic achievements of American workers. It constitutes a yearly national tribute to the contributions workers have made to the strength, prosperity, and well-being of our country. Labor Day Legislation Through the years the nation gave increasing emphasis to Labor Day. The first governmental recognition came through municipal ordinances passed during 1885 and 1886. From these, a movement developed to secure state legislation. The first state bill was introduced into the New York legislature, but the first to become law was passed by Oregon on February 21, 1887. During the year four more states — Colorado, Massachusetts, New Jersey, and New York — created the Labor Day holiday by legislative enactment. By the end of the decade Connecticut, Nebraska, and Pennsylvania had followed suit. By 1894, 23 other states had adopted the holiday in honor of workers, and on June 28 of that year, Congress passed an act making the first Monday in September of each year a legal holiday in the District of Columbia and the territories. Founder of Labor Day The father of labor day More than 100 years after the first Labor Day observance, there is still some doubt as to who first proposed the holiday for workers. Some records show that Peter J. McGuire, general secretary of the Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners and a cofounder of the American Federation of Labor, was first in suggesting a day to honor those "who from rude nature have delved and carved all the grandeur we behold." But Peter McGuire's place in Labor Day history has not gone unchallenged. Many believe that Matthew Maguire, a machinist, not Peter McGuire, founded the holiday. Recent research seems to support the contention that Matthew Maguire, later the secretary of Local 344 of the International Association of Machinists in Paterson, N.J., proposed the holiday in 1882 while serving as secretary of the Central Labor Union in New York. What is clear is that the Central Labor Union adopted a Labor Day proposal and appointed a committee to plan a demonstration and picnic. The First Labor Day The first Labor Day holiday was celebrated on Tuesday, September 5, 1882, in New York City, in accordance with the plans of the Central Labor Union. The Central Labor Union held its second Labor Day holiday just a year later, on September 5, 1883. In 1884 the first Monday in September was selected as the holiday, as originally proposed, and the Central Labor Union urged similar organizations in other cities to follow the example of New York and celebrate a "workingmen's holiday" on that date. The idea spread with the growth of labor organizations, and in 1885 Labor Day was celebrated in many industrial centers of the country. We wish everyone a safe and enjoyable Labor Day weekend, with very little work!
